Reduce Allergens in Your Home

The spaces we live impact our ability to learn and grow properly. Housing can be a contributing factor to health issues like asthma, allergies, lead exposure and other chronic illnesses. Poor housing conditions, chipping and peeling paint, pest infestations and holes in walls can be detrimental to health. Browse the many resources available to rid your home of toxins.

Healthy Homes Asthma Program

The Healthy Homes Asthma program strives to ensure a healthy, asthma-friendly home for all, but especially for children.

Unmonitored or uncontrolled asthma can be fatal for children. Asthma triggers in the home include mold, moisture, poor ventilation, poor temperature control, pests and dust. WHE is assessing and addressing in-home asthma triggers to improve asthma control for children in Allegheny County.

If you or a loved one is struggling with poor indoor air quality or other conditions that have triggered or worsened asthma, you may qualify for home improvements from our fully-funded Healthy Homes Asthma Program. Click here to learn more.

Request a Healthy Home Assessment

Our Community Health Workers (CHWs) can help you create a safer, healthier home. During a Healthy Home Assessment, a CHW will visit your home to discuss common environmental hazards like asthma and allergy triggers, lead paint, mold, and harmful chemicals. You’ll receive personalized advice on how to reduce these risks in your living space.

As part of the assessment, our CHWs provide useful resources, including:

  • Green cleaning kits
  • Water and air filters
  • Educational materials

They can also connect you with other programs and organizations that offer support for housing-related issues and other needs you may have.
